The Next Next Level

It was the year 2003 when writer Leon Neyfakh first encountered a performer known as Juiceboxxx. Juiceboxxx was a fifteen-year-old white rapper from the Milwaukee suburbs.

The climate for rappers of this particular demographic profile was iffy at the time. As Neyfakh puts it in his new book, The Next Next Level: “Despite the fact that Eminem was at the height of his powers, deciding to be a white rapper was still an uncomfortable proposition.” Juiceboxxx went there anyway. And Neyfakh followed.

The Next Next Level is a book about what happened next. You do not have to possess a natural interest in white rappers from Wisconsin in order to enjoy the author’s odyssey—indeed, it may be better if you don’t. Because then you can apply Neyfakh’s charm and depths and insights to whatever elevates YOUR pulse—whether it be Jane Austen or data science or clam chowder or Minions.

Neyfakh put it best: “This is a book about people trying to figure out what it is inside of them that makes them special, and then devoting themselves to the hard work of making it legible to the outside world.”

If that’s not universally applicable, heaven knows what is!

Buy the book and let us know who your personal Juiceboxxx is.

A Few Thoughts on Improving Sightlines

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, vision disability is the single most prevalent disabling condition among children in the United States.

This is not good.

What IS good: it’s possible to tackle this issue, and we are working hard behind the scenes (along with many others!) to do so. We’re very proud to announce a new partnership with the City of New York to provide glasses to local students in need, as part of the Community Schools initiative.

What IS good: it’s possible to tackle this issue, and we are working hard behind the scenes (along with many others!) to do so. We’re very proud to announce a new partnership with the City of New York to provide glasses to local students in need, as part of the Community Schools initiative.

A bit of background: lack of vision care is a critical issue for students citywide. We estimate that between 20-25% of New York City public students have vision problems and require optometric testing and glasses— but don’t have access to either.

As part of the newly-launched program, Warby Parker will provide one pair of glasses to all Community Schools’ students who need them during the 2015-2016 academic year. For the following three school years, we’ll will provide a pair of glasses to all new and transfer Community School students who need them.

Over the past year, we’ve been piloting a similar program in New York City—figuring out what works, what doesn’t, and how to make it go-go-go.

We’re beyond stoked to be working in our own backyard, partnering with the Mayor’s Office to ensure that kids have the tools they need to see the chalkboard, do their homework and go get that education.

Stay tuned for more updates.

Turn the Beat Around

When the largest Beat Generation conference in twenty years happens in your own backyard, you have no choice but to boogie down.

When the largest Beat Generation conference in twenty years happens in your own backyard, you have no choice but to boogie down.

Our San Francisco store hosted a little pre-party for the 2015 Beatnik Shindig, a conference presented by The Beat Museum featuring an embarrassment of riches (Poetry workshops! Scholarly panels! Readings galore! Jazzjazzjazz!).

We welcomed participants with specialty cocktails (for sipping) vintage typewriters (for typing-upon), and live jazz from The Nova Jazz Band and The Word Party (for getting everyone in precisely the right frame of mind).

And now: party photos!

Let’s take a moment to reflect on National Sunglasses Day

Dearest sunglasses,

It’s finally June 27th: the day you’ve been awaiting all year. Not because it’s National Orange Blossom day, and not because it’s Tobey Maguire’s birthday (although we wish you the best, Tobes)…

Dearest sunglasses,

It’s finally June 27th: the day you’ve been awaiting all year. Not because it’s National Orange Blossom day, and not because it’s Tobey Maguire’s birthday (although we wish you the best, Tobes)…

…but because it’s NATIONAL SUNGLASSES DAY.

Thanks for being invented, sunglasses! We’re glad you’re here.

Sincerely yours,
Warby Parker
