We Love Halloween

No disrespect to other holidays, but we sure do have a thing for Halloween around here.

No disrespect to other holidays, but we sure do have a thing for Halloween around here. And this was put on full display last night at our company outing, which took place at a monster-sized warehouse in Brooklyn.

Halloween6

The location was kept secret to all employees beforehand, so we were collectively surprised to walk into a surreal childhood fantasy Halloween dream party, filled with taco and pretzel stands, arcade games (with an endless supply of quarters!), black lights, ping pong tables, roller skates, and dance floors. Really, what else could you ask for? Seriously. Anything?

The costumes were just as impressive. Notable ensembles included Pitbull, Jared Leto (two ways), Shakespeare’s Puck (a nod to our office), Warby ParkAir flight attendants, Home Try-On box, Bob Ross, and Gluteneous Maximus (see below).

We Had a Listening Party with Beck

In case you didn’t hear (<music joke!), we recently teamed up with Beck and music producer Randall Poster to create the Song Reader album.

In case you didn’t hear (<music joke!), we recently teamed up with Beck and music producer Randall Poster to create the Song Reader album—the first officially recorded embodiment of Beck’s book of sheet music.

BECK X WARBY PARKER #3

Like a proud mother, we eagerly invited our friends and family to come listen to the new album at Whitebox Art Center. There was one tiny concern beforehand, though: Will a gallery filled with 200 people provide the best listening experience? Answer: no. So to give the music the respect it deserved, we mounted 20 iPods to the ceiling—each playing one song from the album—and hung headphones from them. And it worked! No one had to be shushed, and everyone experienced the songs in their best form: uninterrupted.

BECK X WARBY PARKER #2

For eye candy, we displayed the song’s artwork (taken from the recently published Song Reader book) on the wall, which gave the partygoers something to bliss out on while hearing the music.

BECK X WARBY PARKER ICE

There was also a masterful ice carver from people’s pops serving up shaved ice in summery flavors like lemon mint rhubarb. (This man was very popular.)

BECK X WARBY PARKER #6

Loudon Wainwright III and David Johansen

Beck even got involved in the action and listened to versions of his own songs sung by different artists—so meta!

BECK X WARBY PARKER #5

Party people!

BECK X WARBY PARKER #10

Our fearless co-founder and co-CEO Dave Gilboa, Beck, our equally fearless co-founder and co-CEO Neil Blumenthal, and Randall Poster.

The Warby Parker Style Guide

We can be a little silly from time to time. But that doesn’t mean we’re not purposeful in the way we write. And always, always, grammatically correct.*

We can be a little silly from time to time. But that doesn’t mean we’re not purposeful in the way we write. And always, always, grammatically correct.*

When the Warby Parker Copy Department was officially born, the first thing it did was make a Style Guide for all employees to keep in their desks—a pocket-sized handbook outlining the official Warby Parker punctuation preferences, formatting guidelines, and policy on Oxford commas.

The actual contents are secret (for employees only!) but the book itself is so cute, we had to share just a teeny bit….

Pneumatic Tubes (!)

Scenario: Our new store on Lexington Avenue features a basement where we store glasses.

Problem: How do we get the glasses upstairs to customers?

Solution: Pneumatic tubes, obviously.

Scenario: Our new store on Lexington Avenue features a basement where we store glasses.

Problem: How do we get the glasses upstairs to customers?

Solution: Pneumatic tubes, obviously.

Originally introduced to New York City in 1897, pneumatic tubes gained popularity as a way to zip smallish packages from one place to another. At one point, a third of all city mail was delivered by pneumatic tubes!

Pneumatic Tubes A Revised

Operating a tube is easy: you take an item and put it inside a canister, then put the canister in an airtight tube. The canister is propelled either by suction or compressed air toward its final destination, at the end of the tube. Easy.

Time may have passed by pneumatic tubes, but we haven’t. A set of tubes has been installed at our Lexington Store to transport glasses and monocles at blazing speed (24 feet per second!) to customers. Stop by and check out the magic for yourself.

For our next store, we’ll be implementing carrier pigeons.

Kidding. (Maybe.)

See ’em in action right over here.

Welcome to Lexington Ave.

We couldn’t be more thrilled to open the doors to our new store in the Upper East Side tomorrow.

We couldn’t be more thrilled to open the doors to our new store in the Upper East Side tomorrow. Home to many of New York’s best-loved museums, grandest historic landmarks, and, of course, literary characters, this part of town has been a dream of ours to settle in since the start—and now we’re here.

Nearly two years after the renowned pharmacy Lascoff Drugs closed its doors, we’ve reopened the celebrated space—enjoy its checkered terrazzo floors, 21-foot cathedral ceilings, gothic windows and two floors (which include a mezzanine). We’ve also installed a pneumatic tube system to transport glasses from one floor to another at top speed (Futuristic!). Hanging above the store will be the decades-old signboard that marks 1209 Lexington Ave.

In addition to eye exam rooms, literature-filled reading nooks, and an honor bar, you’ll also find The Reference Desk—a new one-stop-shop for pickups, adjustments, eye exam check-ins and more.

Come visit us at 1209 Lexington Ave (corner of Lexington Ave and 82nd Street), or clickity click on over to our retail page for more information on the store and our showrooms.

You can book your eye exam online.
