Coffee: it’s our rocket fuel in the morning and our salvation in the afternoon (especially iced, now that the weather’s taken a turn).

As we motor across the US, we’ve downed watered-down gas station brews and multisyllabic options at Starbucks. As we settled down and got to know each of the cities on our itinerary, we made a habit of finding local cafés to frequent. Read on for our most cherished spots.

Barista Parlor in Nashville

Owner Andy Mumma converted this former auto shop into a beautiful open-air space, where he concocts hot brews, cold brews, mochas made with specialty chocolate, and crumbly breakfast biscuits. 519 Gallatin Ave., Nashville, TN 37206

Roast Coach Coffee in San Diego

San Diego’s first mobile pour-over coffee bar serves up cafe con horchata, a blend of locally-roasted coffee and ever-so-sweet rice milk. Perfect for a sunny California day. 3382 30th St., San Diego, CA 92104

Handsome Coffee Roasters in Los Angeles

We dipped in and out of Handsome while prowling the Los Angeles Arts District. You can geek out over rare blends with fancy names OR order a simple cup of coffee. (It’s always nice to have a choice.) An added bonus: Guerrilla Tacos is right outside.

582 Mateo St, Los Angeles, CA 90013

The Mill in San Francisco

Remember when you were eight years old and determined to survive on toast for the rest of your life? We are grateful to The Mill for helping us in our efforts to achieve this dream. Their toast—made with cultish local favorite Josey Baker Bread—is the stuff of childhood dreams. Good coffee, too. 736 Divisadero St, San Francisco, CA 94117

Stumptown in Portland

The baristas at Stumptown are dead serious about their coffee. After a special training session, they are released into the world to create perfect coffee specimens (lots of timers are involved). For non-coffee drinkers, a really good ginger-y iced tea is on the menu.
