Pittsburgh, We’re Here!

Who’s got two thumbs and a new store in Pittsburgh? We do! Actually, collectively, we have way more than two thumbs, but point being: new store in Pittsburgh! (We’re very excited about it.)

This one’s got original artwork by U.K.-based artist Anna Wray, both on the façade and inside behind the Reference Desk, and it’s in a neighborhood full of history and good food.

If you’re in town, come by! We’d love to say hi.

Summer Reading: “We Are Never Meeting in Real Life” by Samantha Irby

The writer (prithee, hustle on over to her blog, stat) covers a menagerie of what would be, in more self-indulgent hands, some real bummer topics: anxiety attacks, an unreliable digestive system, and her orphanhood. But the chuckles and rib-clutchings are aplenty, and you’ll be so pleased with your decision to seclude yourself indoors.

Did You See?!

After a 99-year wait, the Great American Solar Eclipse arrived on Monday—and it was quite the sight.

Actually, if you were at the viewing party that we threw at our Nashville store (right in the path of totality), it was pretty sensational for the eyes, ears, and taste buds: We had lunch fired up on site by local BBQ masters, Martin’s, and live music before, during, and after totality. Futurebirds took the stage leading up to the big moment, and when totality finally came, the ALIAS Chamber Ensemble played a piece that they’d custom-composed for the occasion. It’s still stuck in our heads.

Let’s View This Thing

Today’s the big day: The Great American Solar Eclipse “lands” in Oregon at 10:16 a.m. local time and will makes its way across the country over the course of 1 hour and 32 minutes. We’ll be celebrating a bunch of ways…

Today’s the big day: The Great American Solar Eclipse “lands” in Oregon at 10:16 a.m. local time and will makes its way across the country over the course of 1 hour and 32 minutes.

We’ll be celebrating a bunch of ways:

1. A viewing party at our Nashville store (it’s right in the eclipse’s path of totality, if you happen to be around…)

2. A good old-fashioned countdown clock on our site

3. Astrophotography. It’s a thing! We’ll be sharing professional photographs of the eclipse on Instagram and Facebook, since phone cameras aren’t so great at capturing celestial spectacles like these. Save and re-share as you please.

Finally, just a friendly reminder that you should never look directly at the sun—even with sunglasses, and even during an eclipse (unless you have specially designed viewing glasses).

Re-Introducing the Concentric Collection

Look familiar? Three winning shapes (Durand, Laurel, and Chelsea) now come in the alluring construction that we first introduced in 2014—and just like the frames in our original Concentric Collection, they’re limited edition.

All three have been redesigned with subtle rings of color around their lenses for extra visual intrigue (hence, the “concentric” design detail). We worked with an Italian factory that specializes in an intricate acetate-pressing process to achieve this accent.

And this is new: Each frame is punched up with colorful temples that match or complement those inner hues. The effect? Part eyewear, part art.
