Last Thursday night was the opening reception of Mark Whalen’s Vessel, The Standard, Hollywood’s latest artistic installation.

The Australia native-turned-Los Angeleno is a busy man this time of year (he also had a solo show, Future Perfect, in Singapore this month), but Mark was on hand to introduce his modern ceramics as inspired by ancient Roman and Egyptian pottery.

It’s a multi-process creation (not for the impatient, you’ll see): the clay is spun into shape, painted on, then fired up, glazed, and lastly, fired up again.  The final pieces are a refreshing combination of historical traditions and present-day expressions—a calming addition to The Standard’s public space.

If you’re in the Los Angeles area, swing by The Standard, Hollywood (and our shop too!) before January 15 to catch Vessel.
